Ana Mata (1980).
Lives and works in Lisbon and Proença-a-Nova, Portugal.
Between the city and nature, she considers painting as a place of emotion. Born from compositions created, staged, or found through photography, her vision of painting can linger on biographical moments, on some particularity of the ephemeral, or arise from a reflection on images from the History of Art, cultivating, in these intersections, an idea of ??secrecy and transmission of the intimate. Writing, engraving, drawing, video, and the artist's book are other expressive areas of focus.
SYNOPSIS
These paintings and etchings bring together a way of being in contemplation – in the themes that emerge, as well as in the gesture of a painting that is born slowly, in a gaze that lingers. But there is also a latent tension. There is a body that crosses the painting as it crosses water. There is a portrait with an aquatic gaze that invites us into its liquid mood – and these are moments suspended by the liquid means of painting. The engravings, which contain narratives of enigmatic moments, in their dialogue with the paintings emphasize what is proposed as the title, and, before that, as the motto of the artistic work and, even earlier, as a way of life, following the ancient question:
What to love, if not the enigma?
Et quid amabo nisi quod ænigma est?
The portraits and landscapes, together, invite reflection on the idea of Temperament.
